Looking back at Gretzky's 50 goals in 39 games

On Dec. 30, 1981 Wayne Gretzky did the unthinkable.

He hit the 50-goal plateau in just his 39th game of the season for the Edmonton Oilers.

Prior to that, no player had registered 50 goals in fewer than 50 games -- something both Mike Bossy and Maurice Richard had accomplished.

30 years later, Gretzky believes scoring 50 goals in 39 games is the most impressive of all his records.

"People ask me all the time about my records, but to me, that's my favourite," Gretzky

Blinkered Aussie approach sours NZ test win

FRED WOODCOCK

OPINION:

It's hard to know what was the biggest slap in the face - the blinkered Australian cricket public voting David Warner as man of the match over Kiwi hero Doug Bracewell or Michael 'Pup' Clarke's distasteful post-match television interview?

If we were in Australia, we'd roll out another of those dreadful mobile phone polls to answer the question, but let's not.

Struggling Kings fire head coach Murray

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Los Angeles Kings general manager Dean Lombardi says Terry Murray doesn't deserve the blame for a terrible start to a season of high expectations.

Yet Lombardi decided the head coach had to pay for it anyway.

Los Angeles fired Murray on Monday and replaced him with assistant coach John Stevens, who will be the underachieving club's interim head coach when the Kings open a four-game road trip Tuesday in Boston.

Murray was behind the long-struggling

Egypt’s transition in the months since Hosni Mubarak’s ouster has been rocky, with protests against the military council leading the process, an increase in crime and the battering of the tourism industry that was once a pillar of the economy.

Brophy on Leafs: Time to reverse course

The Maple Leafs have been trying to avoid a losing streak all season and after only one win in five, a homestand might be what they need.

All year the Toronto Maple Leafs have stressed that they cannot allow themselves to get into a prolonged losing streak if their desire to make the playoffs is to become a reality.

After a wonderful start to the year, that at one point saw them atop the NHL, injuries and poor penalty killing have conspired to have them sliding in the standings. The Leafs

The fact that Calgary/Edmonton, St. Louis/Chicago, Montreal/Toronto have a better chance to meet in the first or second round of the playoffs is a good thing.
